This piece is a simple graphite drawing of a textured dress. I created this as a study for clothes design. Where I studied the way the cloth spreads.

This is where gravity comes into play.

The horizontal lines on the torso show the tightness, as it would hug the body. Gravity would be trying to pull the cloth down creating dark creases as shown above.

Then the vertical design stationed at the train of the dress, expresses looseness. Giving it a "flowly" look. Gravity would pull the cloth down. Hence, drawing vertical lines represent gravity pushing it down.

Now if the tightness is switching between tight and loose or the other way around, then to blend it in you would add diagonal lines in the middle. It transitions as gravity pulls the dress down.

When it comes to fashion sketches gravity plays a huge role. But so does the textile or material. As thick materials could effect the looseness, making it appear stiff. And thin material could make the clothing transparent, and too loose.

So whenever I sketch my fashion sketches I keep the type of cloth and gravity in mind.
